Downtown Dining Weeks in Syracuse: Record number of …

Syracuse, N.Y. – Lunch is on the menu for this year’s Downtown Dining Weeks, a change that means a record number of restaurants have signed on to the February tradition.

Also for the first time, organizers are working with the Food Bank of Central New York to collect foods and donations to help feed the hungry.

A total of 40 restaurants are participating in dining weeks, which runs from Feb. 15 to Feb. 28.

But the addition of lunch – a fixed three-course meal for $10 or less – means that restaurants such as The Blue Tusk, Provisions Bakery, Soup R Salad and The Sweet Praxis are participating for the first time.

“We hope it will be a fun way to include restaurants that are only open for lunch,” Merike Treier, Downtown Committee of Syracuse executive director said in a news release. She hopes the expanded offer will encourage the 28,000 employees who work downtown to enjoy lunch out with friends.

Twenty-one restaurants will offer the $10 lunch specials. Thirty-five restaurants are offering $25 dinners, which also is a set menu with three courses. Some of the restaurants are participating in both the lunch and dinner specials.

Downtown Dining Weeks started in 2005 to stir business during what typically is a slower time of year for dining. The once-a-year promotion has grown every year since, continuing to attract new restaurants and new diners each year. Last year, the two-week promotion attracted an estimated 45,000 diners from Onondaga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida and Oswego counties. Visions Federal Credit Union is the main sponsor of dining weeks.

Hotels are also a part of the promotion. Guests who stay at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown, the Jefferson Clinton Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott at Armory Square and the Residence Inn by Marriott at Armory Square will receive a special $185 room rate during the two weeks. Guests who show a dining weeks dinner receipt will have the option to receive an additional $25 off their room rate.

How to help the hungry

  • Food Bank Fridays: On Feb. 16 and Feb. 23, diners can fill out pledge cards at their tables.
  • Those staying at a hotel who show a dinner receipt can opt to forward the $25 room discount to the food bank.
  • Diners can bring non-perishable foods to four downtown parking facilities and park for just $5 after 5 p.m. The parking places are: the Atrium Garage, Clinton Street Garage, the surface lot at Fayette and Walton streets, and the lot at Fayette and Clinton streets.
